Anyone has problems with D7000 folders random creation?

16 December 2010 | Uncategorized

A DPReview user reports that there is problem with D7000 when creating folders.  Somehow , when using U1 and U2 mode dial , the camera create new folders in a somewhat random fashion. Ken Rockwell also has the problem :

It’s not that a folder got full or that the file numbers hit 9,999; my D7000 just does this at random in the middle of shooting. It seems to be sometimes related to switching the U1 U2 mode dial.

There is no known bad effect/damage to the camera or result photos but if there is a defect , Nikon need to address this issue on their next firmware update.

Anyone has the same problem ? Please share with us

    Same problem..
Called Nikon tech support and they had no good answer.

Same annoying problem… It seems to me it happens if the mode is changed while camera is off. Turning on, with the new mode selected, the picture is put in a new folder.
Nikon very kindly asked me to send the camera in for service, but I prefer to wait.

Same problem .. I have not used the U1 or U2 settings.
Did not complain to Nikon (yet).
    Feels like a firmware bug.

Hi guys, I had the same issue but I might have a fix for you to try. Instead of setting the initial folder to 100 set it to 101. Since doing this all my pics and movies have been going into the same folder even when using the different modes (U1, U2, M, A, etc.). I haven’t shot hundreds of photos at once yet, but it might be worth a try

I have this issue as well even with the latest FW. Also, I’ve been using Slot 2 as backup and have noticed that not all the pictures are being backed up. In fact, some of the pictures were only saved on the memory card in Slot 1, while some others were only saved on the memory card in Slot 2. Has anybody had the same issue?

Same problem, but I haven’t used the camera enough yet to really figure out what’s happening. What I have found is that provided I use slot 2 as overflow only it seems to remain stable and save all images to one folder (even when slot 2 becomes active).FYI I am shooting RAW+Fine in all modes, including Easy, U1 and U2 and switch frequently between them. One other odd thing….are video files saved only to slot 1? When slot 1 was full I could not shoot video even with plenty of space on slot 2.

Hi. For me same problem. Random folder creation even in the same hour of shooting. Does anyone anyway knows after how mutch time the camera will correctly create a new folder from last shooting?

Same here. Usually when I switch between U-settings and ex A or S modes. But sometimes just in the mittle of a shooting in the same mode or when camer has been switchen of. And when we reach folder 999?

Nearly the same problem but, in my case I have definitely NOT been switching modes. I stay with Aperture priority. My problem occurs each time I remove the SD card (camera is, of course switched OFF) and then format it after transferring all images to my computer via NIKON TRANSFER. Every time I do this a new sub-folder is created. This problem has only started within the past few days – I have had the camera since November 2010 with no problem until now.

Encountered the same issue, plus on mine the file counter jumped all of a sudden from 1856 to 6016 when a new folder was created, and continues counting from 6016 now. Very strange.

I can confirm that formatting the cards and setting the folder number to 101 for U1 and U2 and the normal menu choices has led to no new folders being created when I switch in and out of U1/2. Great relief. Thanks for the tip james.

I did not experience the “random folder creation” issue with my D7000 until recently. From the purchase date in April 2011 until late July 2011 the issue never occurred. I used various modes (U1 U2 & others) without issue. Then in late July I started experiencing the “random folder creation” problem. This puzzled me so for about 2 weeks I experimented with various settings and modes to try to figure out the exact sequence of events to cause it to occur. The change that I believe trigger the problem to occur was that I changed the function of the second memory card from Overflow to Backup in late July. But that alone does not cause the problem to occur. There are also other things that have to occur to “force” the folder creation and even then I couldn’t make it happen every time. But what I could figure out is that using the 2nd memory card as Backup and then also changing the mode dial following a shot would sometimes trigger the folder creation. I also noted that switching the camera “off” then changing the mode dial, then switching the camera back “on” would sometimes trigger a new folder. The other pertinent piece of information is that switching the function of the 2nd memory card from Backup to Overflow makes the “random folder creation” problem go away no matter what I do to the mode dial.

I’m glad I’m not the only one having this issue. One night a few weeks back I was shooting heavily in burst mode, and when I got home to view the images, I noticed two folders on the memory card. I had recently passed 10,000 shots, but hadn’t come anywhere close to another 10,000 where it should’ve switched like that. I formatted the card, but it insists on going back to the 102D7000 folder even though I still have images “left” in 101. Odd stuff.
